Jeffrey Sachs returns to the University of Malaya, in his capacity as Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Chair in Poverty Studies
Jeffrey Sachs returns to Kuala Lumpur on July 25th to August 1st, as the first holder of the Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Chair in Poverty Studies at the Centre for Poverty and Development Studies, at the University of Malaya. This will be his third visit in this capacity, following visits in 13-20 August 2007, and 5-9 January 2008. Professor Sachs provides guidance to the Centre as a focal point for academic work, research consultancy and technical assistance in the field of poverty and development. Dr Sulochana Nair, Director of the Centre for Poverty and Development Studies and Associate Director in the Faculty of Economics and Administration, will be hosting Professor Sachs on this trip.
The University of Malaya is also one of several universities participating in the “Global Classroom”, led by the Earth Institute. The Global Classroom is a master's-level course titled "Integrated Approaches to Sustainable Development Practice" that links leading problem solvers with hundreds of graduate students around the world through new web technology. The course is aimed to help change the course of development education and create bold new leaders working to achieve a sustainable world.
