On October 19, the Earth Institute, Columbia University hosted its sixth annual Environmental and Sustainable Development Programs Open House. Representatives from 33 educational programs associated with the Earth Institute were present at the event, held in the Low Library Rotunda, including undergraduate majors and special concentrations, master's and Ph.D. programs, and postbaccalaureate and certificate courses of study.
“The event provides prospective students with the opportunity to learn about our programs, to meet members of the Columbia environment and sustainable development community and to discover the depth and breadth of our programming in these areas,” said Louise Rosen, director of the Office of Academic and Research Programs at the Earth Institute. The diverse crowd of nearly 400 attendees was comprised of high school students, undergraduate students and graduate students from Columbia and surrounding universities, along with parents and professionals.
Demand is rising for individuals trained to address the complex issues of environmental management, climate change and sustainable development. The array of programs represented at the Open House demonstrates how many departments at Columbia—including Environmental Sciences; Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology (E3B); and Earth and Environmental Sciences—are equipping future generations with critical problem-solving skills and tools.
Our undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, along with certificate programs and fellowships, are part of the University’s commitment to leadership in environmental and sustainable development education.
