Trade Mission to West Africa

Focus: Oil and Gas Equipment and Services
Dates: November 15-22, 2003
Application Deadline: September 15, 2003

West Africa’s oil and gas sector presents numerous opportunities for U.S. companies that provide oil and gas equipment and services. Completion of the Joint Development Zone (JDZ) agreement between Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe has cleared the way for business to commence in that important offshore area. The first round of international tendering for offshore blocks in the JDZ has closed and bids will be opened and evaluated beginning in October 2003. Liquified natural gas (LNG) has recently come to the forefront of energy activities in Nigeria, and near-term opportunities exist for U.S. companies. Nigeria has already undertaken, or will soon begin, several ambitious LNG projects. Untapped opportunities exist for both independents and majors in Gabon’s shallow-water and deep-water blocks. There are opportunities in West Africa for U.S. companies in many sub-sectors associated with oil and gas extraction, processing, and transportation, but the best prospects include:

  • Exploration and production
  • Technical support services
  • Construction and drilling operations
  • Consulting services
  • Facilities maintenance
  • Environmental management
  • Civil works engineering
  • Pipeline equipment and services

To assist U.S. companies in entering this market, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Office of Energy plans a trade mission to Nigeria, Gabon, and Sao Tome and Principe in November, 2003. The mission plans to include:

  • Meetings with key government officials in Nigeria, Gabon, and Sao Tome and Principe;
  • Meetings with major oil and gas project operators in Nigeria and Gabon;
  • Meetings with Joint Development Zone officials in Sao Tome and Principe;
  • One-on-one meetings with potential customers, clients, and partners, arranged by the U.S. Commercial Service.

The company participation fee is $3000, and covers all costs for screening and setting appointments, meeting space, hospitality, and support. The fee does not include trans-Atlantic air travel, hotels or meals.
