On February 12th CGSD hosted a lecture by Lester Brown, one of the world's foremost authorities on environmental problems.  Lester Brown is the founder and president of the Earth Policy Institute.  He has been hailed by the Washington Post as "one of the world's most influential thinkers" and by The Telegraph of Calcutta as "the guru of the global environmental movement."  The author of many books, Lester Brown founded the Worldwatch Institute and launched the State of the World annual assessments of global environmental problems.  His research on food, population, water, climate change, and renewable energy has been widely influential in providing a vision of an environmentally sustainable economy.

Lester Brown has been the recipient of more than twenty honorary degrees, a MacArthur Fellowship, and numerous prizes and awards.  He received the 1987 United Nations Environment Prize, the 1989 World Wide Fund for Nature Gold Medal, and the 1994 Blue Planet Prize for his "exceptional contribution to solving global environmental problems."  He spoke about his most recent book, entitled Plan B: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble.  Plan B calls for a worldwide mobilization to stabilize population and climate before they spiral out of control, and provides a plan for sustaining economic growth worldwide.
