The Gujarat Project on Sustainable Development
Dr. Bajpai directs CGSD's research project in the Indian state of Gujarat. This project brings together social and physical scientists from various centers of the Earth Institute to advance the cause of Gujarat's sustainable development, and is being undertaken in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad (IIM-A).
Earth Institute scientists working on seismology and disaster management strategies, seasonal and inter-anual climate prediction, agriculture, and water resource management are working together with social scientists, especially economists, to achieve the goals of the project. Their priorities are to reduce poverty, achieve higher rates of economic growth, attract foreign direct investment, and promote labor-intensive manufacturing exports from the state, all in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Seismologists from the Earth Institute are helping to design a new Institute of Seismology Research in Gujarat. Climatologists from the Earth Institute are engaged in helping to improve climate forecasting, mainly rainfall prediction, especially to adjust agricultural activities in view of forecasted outcomes regarding monsoon precipitation. Economists from CGSD, in close collaboration with the faculty of IIM-A, are assisting in these efforts, as well as undertaking research relating to state-level economic growth, foreign investment, and the information and biotechnology sectors.
