Description:
IPE has been using at least one flagship species per site where we are actively carrying out conservation projects. Some examples of this type of work include the black-lion tamarin and the jaguar in the Pontal and the black-faced lion tamarin and the red-tailed parrot in Superagui National Park. In 1998 we conducted the Management Plan for Anavilhanas, a 350000 ha protected area in the Amazon region, and the manatee was the species chosen to become the symbol species for this protected area. Last year IPÊ signed a cooperation agreement with IBAMA, the Brazilian federal environmental agency, to strengthen the partnership and to begin taking a more active role. IPÊ has already identified critical steps to work with manatees in Anavilhanas. The selection of this flagship species is a strategic fit to Wildlife Trust's expanding expertise in manatee conservation.
