We are testing the hypotheses that: a) arsenic exposure from drinking water may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. This hypothesis is based on the fact that arsenic is a known teratogen in animal models; and b) arsenic exposure may be associated with adverse neurodevelopmental effects in young children. We are conducting cross-sectional studies of 10-year old and 6-year old children in Araihazar, Bangladesh, a region which has a wide range of arsenic concentrations in drinking water.
