Together with Dr. Susan Elbin, Dr. Newman will be conducting conservation medicine research and field veterinary activities in the New York Bioscape (100-mile radius of New York City). Dr. Newman is studying the health of Black-crowned Night Herons in NY Harbor which serve as excellent sentinels of NY Harbor ecosystem health. He is also overseeing SEANET in NY, NJ and CT SEANET is a citizen science program in which volunteers quantify the numbers of marine birds that are recovered while walking beaches. The goal is to identify the cause of mortality and this project is part of a larger program based at Tufts Veterinary School in MA. Dr. Newman also leads a Marbled Murrelet Ecology and Health Study in southeast AK, and is contributing to ongoing projects that evaluate the health and disease status of wildlife. Dr. Newman also helps devise and implement the strategic development of the New York Bioscape Initiative and other U.S.-based activities of Wildlife Trust.
