Thematic Focus
The Metropolitan New York Case Study (NYCS) will provide an examination of the environmental footprint of metropolitan New York, particularly with regards to efficiency of use of energy, land and water. The case study will use this issue to motivate an exploration of the benefits to be gained from the establishment of a Metropolitan New York Urban Biosphere Reserve, the goal of this being to increase awareness of the city1s environmental impact, assist its residents in developing long run plans for minimizing the city1s negative impacts on ecosystems around the world.
Multi-Stakeholder Workshops
The case study is to include one to two multi-stakeholder workshops, one of which will be held in Manhattan, another possibly in a suburban setting, most likely Montclair, New Jersey. The workshops will take place in February 2001.
Collaborators and Institutional Affiliates
The NYCS is being prepared under the leadership of Roberta Balstadt-Miller (CIESIN), Cynthia Rosenzweig (Columbia University/NASA/Goddard Institute), and William Solecki (Montclair State University).
