RADIOLARIAN AND DIATOMS: This image presents shell detail of a single-celled marine animal called a radiolarian, which has apparently eaten three even smaller plant-like diatoms and incorporated their shells into its own for extra strength. These tiny organisms at the bottom of the food chain were filtered from seawater near Barbados by Lamont cell biologist O. Roger Anderson during a study of radiolarian ecology to document environmental conditions were modern species occur. Comparison with fossils deposited in sediments over geological time spans helps scientists reconstruct the climate history of the Earth. Magnification - 1578 X
