Understanding Hurricane Risk Response Using Dynamic Lab Simulations
The Earth Institute Fellows Symposium: Meeting the Challenges of Sustainable Development in a Changing World
Speaker: Nada Petrovic
Extreme weather events create uncertain environments in which residents must make preparatory and evacuation decisions. Little is known about how these situations are negotiated in real time. In the realistic, computer-based simulation Stormview, the participants gather information using televised broadcasts, Internet websites, and neighbor testimonials in the accelerated time frame of an approaching hurricane. We examine how information sources and content influence anxiety, preparatory actions, and evacuation decisions.
