Daniel Hillel, an adjunct senior scientist at the Earth Institute, was awarded the 2012 World Food Prize, for his work in conceiving and promoting “micro-irrigation”—the use of low-volume, continuous water supply for growing crops in arid region. In his office at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, shortly before accepting the award, he discussed ancient and modern agriculture, climate change, and his 60-year career.
